Marghera Italy

Marghera is a town belonging to the municipality of Venice, Italy. It is located on the mainland, to the west of the historic city, and forms part of the conurbation of Mestre, of which it constitutes its southern appendage. In mid-2009, the municipality of Marghera had a total of 28,622 inhabitants, of whom 17,522 are in the main nucleus. Marghera is properly the name of the residential nucleus, but it is common to extend its application to the neighboring industrial area, whose exact name is Porto Marghera. The contemporary Marghera comes from the urban plans approved in the 1920s, aimed at providing Venice with a commercial and industrial port and a residential area for its workers. The important port and factory complex houses refineries, petrochemical and fertilizer industries, which caused pollution problems in the area.
