Abu Dhabi is one of the most interesting cities to visit in the United Arab Emirates. In fact, it is the capital! It boasts major attractions that rival its neighbor Dubai. Until the end of the 20th century, its economy relied on camel breeding, date production, and pearl diving along the Persian Gulf coast. With the discovery of oil, the landscape changed dramatically, and Abu Dhabi evolved into the modern city we know today—a global reference point.
If there's one must-see activity in Abu Dhabi, it is visiting the stunning Sheikh Zayed Mosque. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the country's first president, who commissioned its construction in 1952. His remains are also laid to rest in the complex. Its beauty is undeniable, and in recent years it has become one of the country's major landmarks. The building is immense: it is the largest in the United Arab Emirates and the fifteenth largest in the world.
You cannot leave Abu Dhabi without exploring the attractions of Yas Island. This artificial island features some of the best attractions in Abu Dhabi, including Ferrari World.
There, you can experience some of the world's most thrilling rides, such as the Formula Rossa, the fastest roller coaster in the world. It reaches 240 kilometers per hour in 4.5 seconds. You can also try F1 simulators, among many other things. It’s one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi that you shouldn’t miss.
One of the first things to see in Dubai is the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world at 828 meters, visible from over a hundred kilometers away on clear days. At night, it serves as the city's beacon for sailors. Located in Dubai's central district, in the most commercial area, it is surrounded by a large park, a lake, shopping malls, and numerous restaurants. The Burj Khalifa and other skyscrapers form Dubai's iconic skyline.
The 828 meters are divided into 163 floors, with an observation deck at 587 meters. Above that, the building is unoccupied and ends in a large antenna. Just below the observation deck is the highest observation deck in the world: The New Deck, at 555 meters.
While in the city center, be sure to visit the Dubai Fountain, located on the lake in front of the Burj Khalifa. It also holds the top spot for programmed and choreographed fountains, with water reaching heights of 150 meters.
Boats can be rented to view the show from the lake at various times throughout the day: one around 1 PM and several in the evening, when the lighting enhances the spectacle.
Much of Dubai’s neighborhoods are built along the coast. In some cases, just five kilometers west of the bustling city, the buildings disappear to give way to the desert, which expands as you move south or east from the emirate.
To explore it, the best option is a 4x4 excursion to completely deserted areas filled with dunes, fortunately well-connected by road to the coast.
Before the mouth of Dubai Creek in the northern area, there is a district full of souks. Among the most notable is the Dubai Gold Souk, a covered market complex with 250 shops selling 18 and 22-carat gold. Don’t miss it!!!
